Nelle viscere della metropolitana di New York circola il treno dei soldi: si tratta di un piccolo convoglio blindato, protetto da agenti speciali che fa il giro delle varie biglietterie, prelevando gli incassi del giorno. Il desiderio di impadronirsi del convoglio con tutto il suo contenuto è l'idea fissa di Charlie, giocatore incallito e piuttosto iellato che ha contratto un debito con una banda. Charlie è un agente incaricato di fare da esca nelle stazioni per bloccare eventuali teppisti. Quando, però Charlie viene licenziato l'idea di fermare quel treno diventa per lui una vera ossessione.
