Mortalmente ferito durante un conflitto a fuoco con la polizia, il serial killer Charles Lee Ray utilizza un incantesimo voodoo per trasferire la propria anima in un bambolotto di nome Chucky: il quale, donato al piccolo Andy Barclay per il suo compleanno, comincia subito a uccidere. Lo spirito di Charles non ha però nessuna intenzione di rimanere intrappolato per sempre nel corpo del nuovo ospite: la sola via d'uscita consiste nel trasmigrare nel primo essere umano al quale rivelerà la sua vera identità, il che - com'è facile immaginare - pone Andy in mortale pericolo.
